The purpose of this Page
This Page is created to record my personal reflections and opinions during the fight for democracy and progressive values in Vietnam that I committed to take on. It was written in most in Vietnamese, and some in English. Democracy hasn't never lost its appeal in Vietnam and around the World, because it is key to our human dream for freedom and integration. We know the authoritarian forces are living on their borrowed times; nonetheless, we have been in a such long wait of the train of democracy which is scheduled to come to our way. This page attempts to shed a light on the prospect of democracy in Vietnam and globally by provides in-depth analysis on why the democracy movement in Vietnam and the global fourth wave of democracy take years to pick up, for all the internal problems we are met with in Vietnam, and the global issues which held back the progress of democracy; what are opportunities that lie ahead in the context of the New Era. While democracy is the backbone of this page, the author might also put in his hobbyist topics about urban planning, environmental management, and sustainability to enrich the content.
This page is kept non-profit and is only circulated among the author's friends and colleagues rather than aiming to reach the mass. It is not for you if you have problems with long reads, and there's some irritating editorial mistakes expected along the way owing to is non-professional nature. But any contributions are greatly appreciated
About author and his affiliations.
You might call me Shaun or Chu Tuan Anh depending on your language preference. The author is in his mid-20s who acquire qualifications and experiences in environmental planning and management, community development, sustainability; and occupational health and safety management. I've spent my formative years fighting for democracy and human rights since my late teenage. I am associated with the Rally for Democracy and Pluralism (RDP), a political organisation with which I align my political values and principles. If you are interested, please come into my contact below.
First, democracy needs to have an element of pluralism to adopt the nature of diversity and broad-church communities that our country has. I imagine Vietnam to be a country composed of by different communities, so we must fight for their rights and preservation of traditions, and cultures; also their voices and right to representation. It explains why the imaginary of our democratic system should be de-centralised under a federal state. The acknowledgement of pluralism is critical for inclusion and unity of our country. Pluralism is also the toleration of different opinions and ideas no matter of their social backgrounds and political statuses.
Second, the heart of our democratic struggle is national reconciliation. During our history; we were on and off with civil wars, and we fell to probably one of the longest civil war in human history (between 1945 and 1975 and well within the Cold War period). Our struggle for democracy should be a break from the Cold War's civil war legacy, but we should move forth with the adoption of National Reconciliation to heal the wounds and divisions. National Reconciliation, or in other words is a pre-text for the Vietnamese to come across as a nation, garnering the strength and unity needed for the democracy, also seen as a struggle for a better future of the country, to advance. Reconciliation is not just a sentiment, it shall be incorporated into national policies and national philosophy of governance for the future democratic politicians, because reconciliation is the glue of our social fabrics in the new era with disruptive changes and high-frequency re-structuring in our economy. Reconciliation is the backbone of our economic policy which enables social solidarity and securities.
Third, the spirit of our fight is the non-violent principle. We say no to violence as a solution of regime change. We practise the politics of representing ideas and winning the hearts and minds of our people, including our intellectuals and those associated with the communist party. We believe patriotism and the good instincts will prevail after all, and patriotism is the biggest strength for Vietnamese people to consider what matters and get onto the train of democracy. We all desire for the political and economic policies which safeguard the environment, and people's living conditions; and promote opportunities and dynamics for all the social strata to grow; center around the human rights and true essences of happiness even in the context of struggling to catch up with the developed nation. It is all in-one-package in the Illuminations of The Second Era (or might also translated as Opening the Second Era), a Political Project by the RDP.
